“Nirbhaya Could Have Stayed Home”-School teacher’s Sexist Lesson

A biology teacher in Chhattisgarh is under heavy fire for her blatantly sexist lecture to her class after complaints poured in from outraged parents. This incident took place at Raipur Kendriya Vidyalaya, an elite central government school, where the students recorded the teacher’s comments and played it to the principal, followed by parent lodging complaints. The ignorant “educator had accused women of inviting rapes and molestation by dressing inappropriately and blamed the young victim of the Nirbhaya gang rape case that shook the nation five years ago.
She said stated that Nirbhaya had been out with a man who was not her husband, and thus the assailants were not in the wrong given the social rules. To add to the horror of the situation, she added in reference to justice for Nirbhaya- “you say justice is not being done… now these men will be hanged but you can’t control your daughter…”.

The teacher further when on to make outrageous comments on girls wearing jean’s and lipstick as “shamelessly” inviting the male gaze and that when boys see girls “doing it” with one person they assume the girl would “do it” with others as well. Ms Shankhwar, the teacher is question has justified her remarks, as a mere warning to a group of students who were out late.  “I saw Class 11 students outside at 8:30 pm and suggested they go home,” she said. “A person’s safety is in their own hands. What happened with Nirbhaya was wrong, but had she not gone out late, she could have saved herself”.  And to think, this is the state of educator in India! Where is women empowerment and fighting for visibility in public spaces, when such a mentality exists?
