The Indian fashion industry has developed a remarkable presence in the international market. Lately, it is being seen both as a grand and persuasive stage for the worldwide fashion industry. The time isn’t far when Indian cities will rub shoulders with fashion hubs like Paris, Milan, New York and London.
Rohit Verma is one such name in the fashion industry. Talking to him is like talking to your friend. He makes you feel comfortable and relaxed. He speaks with Asma Rafat about Indian fashion industry and his favorite muse.
Why do you get into fashion designing?
I got attracted to designing while I was young and thought to become a designer. The world of fashion is fascinating and is one of the fastest growing industries with international exposure. I always wanted to create something of my own, and so, Rohit Verma label came into existence.
What is the present scenario in the fashion industry today?
Indian fashion industry is booming up in the international market. New avenues are being opened for the people abroad. We have penetrated into the market of Milan, Paris, and London. We are multi-cultural society, and that dominates our design. Each culture has its design and follows a distinctive style of fashion.
How would you rate the fashion industry of India with that of the western world?
We are now among the five best nations in terms of the fashion industry. With the advent of foreign investors and opening up of e-commerce platforms, transactions have become comfortable and relaxed.
I was reading this report which states that Indian Fashion industry would increase from its present net worth of Rs. 200 crores to Rs. 1000 crores in the next five to ten years and that’s good news for the industry. I am sure to achieve that soon because we are creating quality products and are even importing. We get good response especially in traditional wear, and that keeps us motivated.
You have recently showcased your collections at 21st Lions Gold Awards and also won the awards for best designer. Tell us something about the experience.
I was shocked to receive the award. I work to satisfy myself and not to earn awards. If it comes, it is an edge over other designers. I am a firm Iskon believer, and Lord Krishna helps me in getting through each phase of life. This award is like a blessing from Lord Krishna, and I would like to dedicate this award and thank him.
How was the experience of designing the costume for the latest movie – Ek Paheli Leela?
It was an energetic experience! Sunny is a dear friend and working with somebody you already know becomes comfortable. Ahmed (Khan) asked me to design the costumes for his brother’s directorial debut, and I agreed as it is like working with my family.
Who is your favorite muse?
My all-time favorite muse is Rekha. I would love to dress her up. She is one inspiration all designers look up to, and her charisma drives us towards her. Her style lies in her simplicity.
One fashion tip for the youngsters!
Be yourself. Wear your attitude. Create your fashion statement.
