As first reported by Janta Ka Reporter on 19 November, Rahul Gandhi may be declared the new Congress chief by Monday evening. The 47-year-old Congress leader arrived at the party HQ at 24 Akbar Road to file his nominations on Monday morning. Among those likely to be his proposers are his mother and Congress President Sonia Gandhi, Former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, Ahmed Patel, Ghulam Nabi Azad and six Congress chief ministers including Punjab’s Captain Amarinder Singh. Singh, who was earlier seen as someone opposed to Rahul’s elevation as the party chief, on Monday said that the latter will make a great prime minister. He told reporters, “If you ask me, I think he will make a very good Prime Minister.” In the event that Rahul doesn’t face any challenge from other Congress leaders for the election to the post of Congress president, he will be declared the new successor to Sonia Gandhi by today evening, says a top aide. The party had also released the time table for the election process announcing that the election for the new president’s post will be held on 16 December, while the counting will take place on 19 December, a day after the Gujarat and Himachal Pradesh results are announced.
